PERRY HAS FEW PEERS
Fr Jul 22 – 4:00 pm (USA)/20:00 GMT
Sa Jul 23 – 3:00 pm (CBS)/19:00 GMT
Su Jul 24 – 3:00 pm (CBS)/19:00 GMT
Kenny Perry is an unoriginal selection for this week’s US Bank
Championship, but such is the weakness of the field (16/1 second favorite
Scott Verplank has not won since 201 and is a final round bottler!) that
any doubts about him being jet-lagged from his visit to Scotland last
week are more than compensated by his generous price of 13/2. While not being
royal or ancient, like St Andrews, the course at Brown Deer Park commands
respect with some of the longest rough on the Tour. For that reason the
ability to hit it straight off the tee is essential, and the accurate
Perry has top marks in that department. No wonder he’s already shown a liking
for the course by winning there in 2003 (top seven in all of his five starts
here!). As a two-time winner already this season, he’ll not be afraid to win either, unlike some of his rivals who seem to have forgotten how to close out tournaments.

FIRST DOWN
The wait will soon be over for the millions of NFL die-hards. Week 1 of
the new season is just around the corner, with 32 teams vying for a trip to
Detroit, MI in Super Bowl XL, and it’s never too early to consider a
wager on the opening games. Of those 32 clubs, only 12 get the opportunity to
compete in the playoffs and, while it’s important to have the momentum
entering the postseason, at the same time a team doesn’t want to be fighting its way out of a hole in October, even November. The importance of a good start should not be underestimated, and some squads have fared better in this department over the past five years compared to others. Take the Rams for example. They are 4-1 straight up over that time but 1-4 against the spread, which is at least a better record than the Dallas Cowboys (0-5 SU, 1-5 ATS!). On the flip side, Jacksonville and Denver are
the only two teams to record a perfect 5-0 ATS mark, while the Panthers are
not far behind with an impressive 4-1. The season opener is at Gillette
Stadium on Thursday September 8th, with the Patriots hosting the Raiders,
and anyone considering backing against the reigning champions might want
to
reconsider. The last Super Bowl winner not to cover the point spread was
St
Louis in 2000 – the Rams defeated Denver 41-36, but failed to cover as
seven-point favourites.

Selected NFL Week 1 Lines: Raiders @ Patriots (-7.5); Rams (-3.0) @
49ers;
Cowboys @ Chargers (-4.5); Seahawks @ Jaguars (-3.0); Broncos (-3.5) @
Dolphins – all teams @ 10/11

GORDON BACK ON RIGHT TRACK
Su Jul 24 – 1:00 pm (TNT)/17:00 GMT
The ‘Race for the Chase’ continues at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, with Tony
Stewart gunning for his fourth win in five starts. Stewart (13/2 to win
again this week), who scored his first win in 10 months at Sonoma last
month, has a win at Pocono already to his name (in 2003), to go along
with two top-fives and eight top-10 finishes at the track. Even that record is
not as hot as that of Series points leader Jimmie Johnson, who’ll be
trying to secure his third Pocono win in the four most recent races, including a
sweep last year. Johnson is 11/2 favorite to win this week, but this
could be a good opportunity for his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon
(9/1) to turn around what has been a poor season by his standards. The
Hendrick stable, which also includes Brian Vickers (10/1), is Pocono’s
all-time leading race team with 10 victories, and Gordon is the track’s
all-time leading money winner with more than $2 million, and three Pocono
wins overall. His record also shows he finishes in the top five 50
percent of the time. And, despite being born in California, it is Pennsylvania
that boasts more Gordon fans than any other state, support which can give him
the confidence and motivation to step up his performance this week.
Another driver to look out for this week is Carl Edwards (12/1), who looked
anything but a novice when taking the checkered flag at Pocono back in
June.

CARDINALS LOOK GOOD TO GO ONE BETTER
After last October’s World Series loss, it would have been understandable
if the St Louis Cardinals had come out of the gates a bit sluggish in
2005. However the opposite has happened as they have emerged even more
determined to go one better this season. They have already built a massive lead in
the NL Central (1/50) and, if they can wrap up the division early, they will
be a rested and healthy team going into the playoffs where they will be
surely too strong for any other National League club. Take the 7/5 for the
League now, and at the same time, grab some of the 7/2 to win the whole thing.
They will have learnt a great deal from losing last years final, while
the Red Sox, although still finding a way to win, don’t seem as strong this
season.
