Its a strategy thats not for the faint-hearted and one that usually makes us
shout at the screen when we see pro poker players raise on those nasty 9-2
hands. But Daniel Negreanu nicely lays out when its actually useful to play junk
hands – showcasing Gus Hansen’s trash hand specialty
The basic principle behind playing a trash hand isn’t that you
believe your hand has any value at all. It’s based on two things: You’re
representing a strong hand by bluffing and you’re hoping your opponent(s) don’t
have much of a hand.
Negreanu goes on to give a good Hold’em
example
Everyone has folded to you in last position, and you’re dealt the
worst hand in hold’em: 7-2 off-suit. Probably 98 percent of the time I’d suggest
folding this junk and waiting for a better situation. Unless, of course, you
know that the two players in the blinds are conservative types who operate very
predictably. In this case, you can raise with any two cards — now, this is
important — because you won’t be playing your hand, you’ll be playing
theirs.
If you do raise, chances are the blinds will both fold. That
would be the most desired result, but even if they don’t, you aren’t necessarily
out of the hand.
Suppose the big blind calls your raise and the flop
comes As 9c 4d. If the conservative player in the big blind doesn’t have the
ace, he’ll probably check to you. Despite the fact that you have nothing at all,
you should still bet on the flop. If your opponent calls the bet, or, worse,
raises, then you’ll abort mission. What will happen more often than not is that
he’ll fold if he doesn’t have the pair of aces.
That’s not the only way
you can win the pot; you could hit the flop yourself. Sure, 7-2 is a really poor
hand, and difficult to hit, but you might just get lucky and flop a pair, two
pair or even three of a kind.
Its food for thought if you
have the stomach for it. Otherwise do as the playbooks say – and throw the trash
away
Article: A
lesson in poker recycling
GIBRALTAR, March 6 /PRNewswire/ — At the final table of the No-Limit Texas
Hold’em World Series of Poker Main Event, the greatest poker players in the
world are at war with each other, giving cold stares and making bluffs,
painfully relinquishing chips until only one is left standing, ready to claim a
fortune. But fortunes are made at more than one table at the World Series of
Poker (WSOP).
This summer River Belle Online Poker will send one of its loyal players to
compete in any or all of the 45 events at the 2006 World Series of Poker. Entry
into the competition can be done in one of two ways: logging on to www.riverbellepoker.com
and finding the WSOP Multi Event promotion or by accessing the WSOP Multi Event
tables in the Satellites tab of Multi-Table Tournaments in the River Belle Poker
software. The final tournament to determine the River Belle representative at
the WSOP is scheduled for May 20th, and players can enter into qualifying
tournaments with buy-ins as low as $11+$1.
The winner will have one month to recuperate before a two month marathon of
competitive poker in Las Vegas. They will arrive as the best player on the River
Belle network and could leave as the best player in the world. To make the
experience even more comfortable, River Belle will be including up to 60 nights
of accommodation in a luxury suite at the Rio Hotel & Casino, round trip
tickets for the player and their guest, plus $3,500 in spending money. All told,
the lucky River Belle rep will be winning a prize package of more than $130,000,
with an opportunity to experience the WSOP and win millions.
"This is an opportunity to live and breath poker for two months," said Tim
Johnson, Chairman of Carmen Media Group, owners of Belle Rock Entertainment.
"This promotion is available to every single River Belle player. I wish everyone
the best of luck as always, but in this case luck will only get your foot in the
door. The rest is up to your skill and passion for poker."
Wooo… Riverbelle is giving 111 at the King Cashalot slot…
That’s 111 chances to hit the jackpot, which is never
less
than $100,000 on King Cashalot.
You’ll receive $200 free for making a deposit of $50 as a New Real Player,
which means you’ll be able to spin 111 times for your chance to win $100,000 or
more!
