What’s a hot streak? Is it something that should affect the
way you play?
Well, if you’re sitting there winning many hands no matter what mediocre
cards you started with, your straights fill in and your flushes come to
fruition, and your opponents are seeing your chips pile up — it seems to
everyone like either you’re a poker genius or that a good fairy is hovering
over, waving her wand at you — you’re on a streak. A rush. A hot string of
cards.
The thing you should understand is that it’s random. Normal variation has
brought it about, but the fact that you got your lucky card on the river the
last 3 hands running does NOT mean it is statistically any more likely to happen
on your next hand. Cards are neutral, not divinely drawn to you. Don’t count on
luck continuing.
What you can count on is your psychology, and that of other people. Luck has
a good effect on you and your confidence level. It has an influence on how the
others at the table play back at you. They will react to the lucky events that
surrounded you up to now: They will be cowed to some extent. This may be a bit
of superstition on their
part, if they happen to have a very good idea that your wins are due to luck
because you’re not a perfect player. But it’s natural for them to still act as
if it were you doing it yourself.
Now, you have to truly know your own skill level. If you’re not good, being
on a rush may cause you to become worse. A cautious, tight player might be led
to make some sudden moves when he sees the cards are coming to him, poor moves;
but he happens to win anyway. Then he does it again.
But if you know you’re a good poker player and know good starting hands and
how hand values change according to the action, your position, and what cards
you’re probably playing against; then winning and the resulting confidence from
winning can help you play even better. You can play some hands you ordinarily
wouldn’t, because you know when to drop these when they aren’t improving. You
feel now you can "afford" to because of the win. You know they might pay off
very well indeed, you just didn’t want to chance it before. But now your betting
comfort zone has increased just a little, temporarily. That comfort zone will go
back to what it was before, but that’s okay. We’re talking about the phenomenon
of the hot streak.
The reaction of other players to you while you’re winning is extremely
advantageous. They will start respecting your raises and folding more often,
even when they shouldn’t fold. They will do it when they have invested amounts
in the pot that actually called for them to stay the course. And they’ll call or
just check instead of raising you — allowing you a chance to catch your card at
the end. If you have a made hand already, then their calling is that much worse
for them. And they’re doing it, really, out of superstition. Our psychology is a
great thing

One could certainly argue that 2005 was the most significant year in poker
history, as a number of amazing things happened. It was a landmark year for the
growth of online poker, entrants in major events, logo wear and sponsorship for
players, televised events, charity poker tournaments, and the success of the
poker industry in general.
Let’s start with this astonishing fact: One
poker tournament had a prize pool of more than $56 million, with $7.5 million
going to the winner! For many years, only one person a year made a million
dollars in a poker tournament, but in 2005, 30 players became millionaires in
poker tournaments (highlighted by the nine guys who made a million dollars or
more in the main event of the World Series of Poker).
And what can you
say about the growth of online poker in 2005? There have been very few
businesses in the world (if any) that have grown as fast and been as successful
as online poker. How’s this for openers? The industry leader, PartyPoker.com,
was launched in August 2001, and PartyGaming went public on the London Stock
Exchange in June 2005 for $9 billion! Yes, that’s billion!
The poker
world was “hot” in 2005. New poker rooms continued to sprout up and existing
rooms had record earnings last year. And don’t look for that trend to change. A
number of video games, new books, DVDs, and other educational materials were
revealed in the past year. In addition, numerous poker-related businesses, such
as instructional seminars like WPT Boot Camp, were launched in
2005.
There was record-smashing attendance in World Poker Tour events and
the WSOP. Incredibly, only one event in the four-year history of the WPT has
declined in attendance from the previous year, and it didn’t decline by much.
That was in Paris, and in my view, it happened only because the WSOP backed its
event up a few months and the Paris event came right on the heels of it. Many
players were simply “pokered out.”
There were lots of outstanding
performances by players during the year. First and foremost, hats off to Joe
Hachem of Australia, who won the cat’s meow, the main event at the WSOP. Hachem
captured the prestigious title of world champion of poker and $7.5 million! And
you can look for poker’s popularity to increase worldwide because a foreigner
won that title. Estimates are that poker has already expanded tenfold in
Australia.
Speaking of top performances at the WSOP, 72-year-old Doyle
Brunson captured his 10th bracelet, breaking the three-way tie between Doyle,
Phil Hellmuth, and Johnny Chan. Then, not to be outdone, Chan captured his 10th
title in the very next event he played. “Wow” is all you can say about those
performances.
Perhaps the most prestigious award at the WSOP (among the
players, anyway) is that of best all-around player. That distinction went to top
pro Allen Cunningham. And Mark Seif gets a tip of the hat, as he was the only
player to win multiple events at the 2005 WSOP.
As for the ladies,
Jennifer Tilly became the queen of poker in 2005 because of her win at the WSOP,
as well as capturing the “Ladies Night” title on the World Poker Tour. This
Academy Award-nominated actress (Best Actress nomination for Bullets Over
Broadway) has taken to the green felt like a duck to water. She can
play!
Lots of players did well in 2005, but honorable mention goes to
those who cashed for big paydays on multiple occasions. That includes guys like
Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow, Gavin Smith, Minh Ly, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi,
Michael Gracz, Chris Ferguson, Ted Forrest, Freddy Deeb, John Phan, Tony Ma, and
Kido Pham.
As for top performances on the World Poker Tour, 26-year-old
Tuan Le deserves a round of applause. Tuan captured the WPT World Championship
(his second WPT title) and became the all-time leading money winner on the World
Poker Tour with more than $4.4 million!
Youth certainly prevailed on the
WPT in 2005. It started in Tunica in January when 23-year-old John Stolzmann won
the World Poker Open title and more than $1.4 million. The 24-year-olds then
took over. In February, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi won the L.A. Poker
Classic and more than $1.8 million, and in March, Michael Gracz captured the
PartyPoker Million and $1.5 million. In October, 20-year-old Josh Schlein was
the turn of a card away from winning the Aruba Poker Classic, and in November,
21-year-old Nick Schulman became the youngest WPT champion in history when he
won the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods and more than $2.1 million.
With a
number of guys in their 20s becoming poker millionaires, is it any wonder that
so many young people are playing poker?
All is well in the poker world.
Happy new year!

If you are playing video poker, then Jacks-or-Better is a great machine to play and you can increase the odds of success dramatically by learning five simple tips.
You don’t need to spend a long time learning these tips; they’re simple, quick, and easy to learn. Jacks-or-Better video poker is fun anyway, but even more so when you’re winning big payouts!
Jacks or Better - The King of Video Poker
The three most played video poker games are Deuces Wild, Jacks-or-Better, and Joker Poker. By far the most popular of the three is Jacks-or-Better, and for good reason - it’s all to do with the odds of success.
Here then are your five tips for success in Jacks-or-Better video poker.
Five Tips to Play Jacks-or-Better Video Poker
1. Not all Jacks-or-Better-Games are the Same
Jacks-or-Better will give you a 99.54% expected rate of return when played correctly.
On the front of the machine is displayed the payouts for a Full House and a Flush respectively.
Here are the payouts for various machines:
Machine Type Machine Payback (with Strategy)
9 for a full house or 6 for a flush 99.5%
8 for a full house or 5 for a flush 97.4%
7 for a full house or 5 for a flush 96.3%
6 for a full house or 5 for a flush 95.2%
You want the best odds when you play Jacks or better and that means playing a 9 / 6 machine. You don’t have to play the others - so don’t!
2. The Importance of the Royal Flush
Always play the maximum number of coins in order to be eligible for the bonus payout for a royal flush.
The only way to beat a video poker machine is to hit a high paying royal flush. To do this you need to be able to play for a long time on the least money you can. This is another reason for playing the 9 / 6 Jacks-or-Better machine.
3. Take Your Time
Take your time to study every hand. The machine is in no hurry and neither should you be.
4. Turning Losers into Winners
Only 21% of the hands dealt are winning ones in Jacks or Better, meaning 79% are losing hands.
The difference between success and failure for players is the ability to convert the 79% of losing hands into winners.
If you follow the rules below, you will increase your odds of success.
5. A Simple Strategy to Increase Your Odds of Success
Hold all paying hands. The exception is: Break up a lesser paying hand if you get four cards to a royal flush.
When you’re dealt non-paying hands, check the following, and hold as per the list:
· Hold any four cards to a straight flush.
· Hold any three cards to a royal flush.
· Hold any four cards to a flush.
· Hold any low pair (tens or lower).
· Hold any four-card consecutive straight.
· Hold any two high cards of the same suit.
· Hold any three cards to a straight flush.
· Hold J, Q, and K of different suites.
· Hold any two high cards of different suits.
· Hold J, Q or K with a Ten of the same suit.
· Hold any single high card.
If you aren’t dealt any of the above, draw five new cards. Don’t be afraid to do this!
